Claire has experienced a great loss, and is facing another one—and she just doesn’t know if she’s ready to deal. Dr. Mary Rennalls looks at beautiful Claire with more than pity and compassion, but will the two women find solace in each other’s arms, or will Claire’s fear of losing yet another loved one keep her from trusting again?

Clare C’s Review

Selena Kitt knows how to pull on heartstrings. Stay is a short story about love and loss, about coming to terms with grief and feeling alive again. Two years after losing her husband, Claire loses her last link to him, their dog, Isaac. Ms. Kitt is skillful at communicating Claire’s agony and at leading the reader through Claire’s decision to seek comfort in the hands of her veterinarian.

At first, I was a little upset about that. I wondered how a vet could take advantage of someone so obviously grieving, but a second read made me realize that Claire takes advantage of the vet, Mary, every bit as much. I don’t know if it’s the beginning of a beautiful romance or just some temporary solace. In the end, it doesn’t matter because it’s clear the two women need one another.

This story is about so much more than losing a pet or coming to terms with the loss of a spouse. It’s about overcoming survivor’s guilt and learning to embrace life once more. Stay is a piece that will definitely linger in my consciousness for a long, long time. Grab a box of tissues when you curl up with this one.
