Fires raging in hell couldn’t match the hot, undeniable lust between a witch and a demon.

Claudette's Review

Witch and coven leader Leona upsets her coven when she suggests that the only way to recover a valuable book stolen by demons is to summon one and force it to retrieve the book. Demons once summoned will only carry out a task if they are paid with a soul. Summoning demons is the kind of thing that only foolish humans do. As witches their job is to release the souls stolen by the demons and banish them back to hell.

There is a lot of dissention in the ranks mainly led by her uncle, and the last witch who summoned a demon, Leona’s mother, paid the price with her life and soul. The lost book has information that could be used against them so it is imperative that they get the book back. Carrick is a half-demon, born of a human mother; his soul was stolen by his demon father at birth. Having human emotions he refuses to steal souls like other demons and has never been accepted by them as a result. Because he is soul-less he cannot leave the otherworld he has been trapped in, nor can he compromise his morals and taken on a soul stolen by another demon. Leona is lucky that when she performs the summoning ritual, she transports Carrick to her. Though she is far from powerless, she has no plan and no means to stop a demon, if he had been intent on taking her soul.

At first Leona suspects that Carrick appearing in bodily form is a trick to fool her into trusting him. The unwilling attraction she feels is also something she cannot trust. Carrick shows her that he is like no other demon, and that she can trust him heart - and soul. This book is the first in a series and I have to say that it was much too short. It ends on an abrupt cliffhanger. I was in no hurry to say goodbye to these characters and look forward to reading the following books.
