From the moment Tristan and Isobel see each other, the sparks fly. There meeting is unforgettable. He is charming; she doesn’t want to be impressed but finds that she is, and even though they don’t know who the other person really is they open up to each other in an unforgettable way.

Then the truth comes out. He is Tristan MacGregor and she is Isobel Fergusson. Although he was only a child, a fight between Tristan and Isobel’s brother, Alex caused Isobel’s father to challenge Tristan’s father to a fight. The terrible night ended with Tristan’s uncle Robert killed and Tristan’s father killing Isobel’s father leaving Tristan forever scarred and Isobel and her six siblings orphaned.

There is so much hate between the two families that it seems almost impossible that these two should fall in love—especially because no one wants it less than Isobel. But, the attraction between them is real and Tristan—holding a gallant soul like the character he was named after—is not to be dissuaded. He might not be able to win Isobel’s love but he will settle for bringing peace to their two families.

I had not read the first book in this series by Paula Quinn, although I’m going to now. It didn’t matter. This book stood alone on its own merits and was an awesome, incredible read that brought me into the Scottish highlands and, in some ways, a harder time where almost impossible odds bring to live an incredible romance that I will never forget.

The love scenes, although they take some time to show up, are very satisfying as Tristan woos Isobel slowly over time. Her brothers were delightful characters; I’m hoping Patrick gets his own book. I can’t wait to read more of the MacGregors. Great book. Great read. Great author.
