How did you end up becoming a writer?

It’s actually a pretty funny story. I started dating a ‘nerd’ and we were going on our first vacation together. I knew he was bringing books on the plane so I didn’t want to just bring my ipod and some magazines for entertainment. I wanted to show I was smarter than I looked, so I ran out and bought a few books to bring with me. Joke was on me since I read more than he did and got seriously hooked in the romance genre.


Little did I know I would be looking up every forum from here to Guam about the books I had recently read. I ended up finding a group on Goodreads and quickly met a bunch of people who shared the same obsession for Romance books. Majority of them were writers and would have threads specifically for writing short stories and little role-playing games. I figured, eh, what the hell, and gave it a try. From there it grew to such a passion that I was writing short stories for friends and other groups. My family and friends read my work and thought I should take it to the next level, a novel. Before I really realized what I was doing I had written the majority of The Vessel and absolutely loved writing. Now, I really can not picture doing anything else with my time.


Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Ideas sometimes hit you like a Mack truck heading down a highway. There were times that I was driving and had to pull over to write things down, or woke up in the middle of the night to grab my laptop. It’s really quite fun to see how your story turns out at the end of so many bits and pieces being added at different times. I know when things aren’t working out as planned I sit with my hubby to be and brainstorm until I can come up with something that works. It’s always helpful to have someone so supportive living with you to help in times of need.


If you had to pick a favorite among your characters, which one would you pick and why?

That’s such a tough question considering they all hold a special place in my heart. With all the creatures, Mages, and humans I would have to say that Gwenny is my favorite. I am such a sucker for fairies and tiny beings. I just couldn’t help falling for her the minute she was introduced. She’s very sweet and innocent but holds power far greater then one would expect. You will see a lot more of Gwenny and her people in the second book, so I do hope you stick around to read it.



What do you do to relax after a successful day of writing?

Relax? Writing is my form of relaxation. I work a full time job, I go to school and right now in the process of planning a wedding. So when I have free time, sitting at my computer and typing away is my form of unwinding. What better way then to get lost in your own made up world?



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?

I read almost as much as I talk, and trust me I can gab with the best of ‘em. My favorite genre is paranormal, science fiction, time travel, or anything with a great love story. I just love that warm and gooey feeling I get when reading about a couples' love affair. Top authors are JR Ward, Karen Marie Moning, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and the list goes on and on.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I just finished a new shifter book I co-wrote with a friend Jennifer Salaiz. That is in the process of being edited as we speak. I am halfway through the second book in the Kingdom Series and working on two other stories that I just cannot wait to finish.



Do you have any new releases coming out soon?

How did you end up becoming a writer?



I have always loved books, even before I could read. I loved the way books looked and felt and how the words looked on the paper. I knew that I wanted to make a permanent mark through writing and getting published. So I always read, and I wrote on my own. When I could take classes in school, I did to perfect my craft. I majored in creative writing for my bachelor’s degree, and I received my master’s degree in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University.



Where do the ideas for your stories come from?


My ideas come from dreams, newspaper articles, news stories, TV shows, just life. For example, I got the idea for my contemporary interracial BDSM erotic romance novel Love My Way because I wondered if it would be possible to do a BDSM version of the TV show “The Bachelor.” A lot of times, I’ll get story ideas from song titles. Although I’m not crazy about the Cure song “Fascination Street”, I like the idea behind the title. What would happen if there was a neighborhood of people that swapped sexual partners? So that’s the idea behind that story.

If you had to pick a favorite among your characters, which one would you pick and why?

Well, like a good author, I have to say that all of my characters are my favorite. However, there are a couple of characters that were more fun to write than others. I loved writing my hero from Love My Way, Eagan Morton. Writing Erik Hendrix, my hero from my contemporary interracial BDSM erotic romance novel Corporate Needs, was fun, too. I love writing alpha male characters with vulnerable sides.



What is your favorite thing about being an author? What keeps you going?


I absolutely love creating whole worlds that I can control. It’s an absolute kick to know what a character looks like, what he/she says, does, sound like, even how they make love and why. It’s better than any TV show.

Readers, honestly, keep me going. I love getting messages from readers letting me know what they like, and sometimes what they don’t like, about my work. Without readers, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?


I do like to read. I’ve always said that to be a successful writer, you need to be a great reader. You have to experience other writing styles and voices. It helps you strengthen your own craft.

I’m a true fan of romances, but I love contemporary romances. Because I write BDSM erotic romances, one would think that’s all I read. Actually, I would much rather read lighter contemporary romances like from Jennifer Crusie. I also love Jackie Collins. She is the true Queen of Steam. I cut my teeth on highly-sensual romances with her work. Like I was telling fellow author and friend, Yvette Hines, to write books with the names The Bitch and The Stud, you have to write highly erotic stories.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?


I’m always working on something. Right now I’m working on something that’s not BDSM. I’m trying my hand at a big of erotic suspense. The story will still be interracial.



Do you have any new releases coming out soon?


I’ve just have all three books in my Corporate series released through Phaze Books. The books in the series are Corporate Seduction, Corporate Desires, and Corporate Needs. All of the titles in the series are contemporary interracial BDSM erotic romances.

How did you end up becoming a writer?


I’ve always had quite the wild imagination. As a child I probably hammered nails into every tree in our yard to build a tree house, and stole nearly every one of my mother’s sheets to wrap around my homemade teepees. From there I’d play the role of both hero and heroine. I wrote short stories and poetry, in and out of my fortress, but never imagined becoming a published author. In high school, my English teacher praised a story I wrote about flying in float airplanes with my father and from there I’d decided to pursue a career in writing. It wasn’t until I was 23 and pregnant with my son that I wrote my first novel. After several rejections and revisions I was offered a contract and I’ve been at it ever since. *grins*



Where do you get the ideas for your stories?


Some of my stories are based on my own experiences, or ones I’ve been witness to. I grew up at a fishing and hunting tourist resort in Northern Ontario, so the setting to a lot of my work is in the wilderness. I’ve met thousands of people in my life, been a part of many great and terrible situations, and sometimes memories of past events and people trigger a great premise, or a character. And sometimes an idea comes to me out of the blue and I just type away. My boyfriend was also a member of one of the most dangerous street gangs in Los Angeles, and he’s also a Marine, so I think you can imagine all of the ideas he puts into my head for a great story. I’m also writing his life story which will be a guaranteed page-turner. Life is never dull in my neck of the woods.



What do you feel makes your stories stand apart from others in your genre(s)?


I dare to be different and I’m not afraid to create a character not often found in Romances today. Also, many of my stories are set in Canada’s beautiful wilderness.


What do you do to celebrate a new book contract?

When all the bragging and boasting is done, I’m whisked away by my own dangerous hero. *grins*



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?


I’m a voracious reader. I can steal away with a great novel and read for hours, sometimes all night. My favorite genre is romance and/or erotic romance in Historical, Suspense, Regency, and Western sub-genres. I do read some Contemporary, but Historical is my all-time fav. My favorite authors are Lisa Kleypas, Eve Silver, Celeste Bradley, and Emma Wildes, just to name a few. I particularly enjoy an author who writes with sensual flavor, laced with good humor.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?


Definitely! If I’m not writing something I feel useless. Currently, under my pen name, Bonita, I’m writing several short contemporaries. I love to write shorts when the novel bug has deserted me. Under my other name, Blair Burns, I’m working on the series, Distant Shores, where the death of an Irish Sea captain brings together his five illegitimate sons.


Do you have any new releases coming out soon?


My next release is, Torrid Teasers Vol. #65~ A Thug’s Love & Love Thy Soldier. This collection of shorts is about good and bad heroes and the women who love them. The release date is scheduled on or around, Oct. 15th, by Whiskey Creek Press-Torrid.

How did you end up becoming a writer?



I’ve always had an active imagination and as a child I’d tell my mother my thoughts and dreams. She suggested one day that I write my ideas into a notebook and perhaps I could create a story from them. Then in high school, I took a creative writing class where the teacher praised my work and suggested I seek publication. Until then, I’d never considered that people actually got paid to write stories. After that I researched and studied the craft of writing for several years. I wrote while I worked as an Assistant Manager at a bookstore, but when I got married and started my family, I stepped down to part-time to stay home with my children. Having my kids gave me the motivation I needed to get serious about my writing. I received the contract for my e-book on my firstborn son’s 3rd birthday.


What is your favorite genre to write?


Romance is my absolute favorite. I’m all about happily-ever-after! I’ve been known to re-write the sad endings from movies to give the characters the HEA I think they deserve. And within the romance genre, I write historical paranormal. The Regency and Victorian eras are my favorites, to read, write and research. And I’ve been in love with all things paranormal since I was very young and growing up in my grandmother’s haunted house (of course, that’s another story!).


Do you plot out your stories or does your muse carry you along?



My muse often takes me on a wild, turbulent ride. My ideas often come to me in dreams and are at times nicely pre-plotted, so it’s left to my muse to fill in the gaps and holes. Sometimes I have the story already written in my head and then other times I’m discovering what happens as I go. It really depends on the story.



How do you relax after a successful writing day?


Sleep! I have 3 children under the age of 4, so I don’t get much writing done during the day. My writing day starts after bedtime. I have between 2 to 4 hours each night to get as much done as I can before I pass out from exhaustion. At times, I’ve fallen asleep at the computer and other times I’ve pushed it till 1 or 2 in the morning because I just cannot stop writing a particular scene or idea. Though I always regret this the next morning since my kids don’t understand the concept of sleeping in!



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?



Absolutely! How can you be a writer if you’re not a reader first? And of course, my favorite genre to read is romance! The very first romance I read was The Romance of the Rose by Claire Delacroix. This was the beginning of my addiction to the genre! But, I have to admit, I inherited my love of reading from my mother. Most of my memories of her are with a book in her hand. A romance novel, of course! She was never without one, a tradition I’m glad to continue. I have so many favorite authors and here are a few off the top of my head: Claire Delacroix, Deborah Simmons, Gayle Wilson, Elizabeth Thornton, Lynn Kurland, Sandra Hill, Katie Macalister, Laurell K. Hamilton, Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, and Janet Evanovich.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?


I’m re-writing segments of my novel With My Last Breath which won 3rd place in the Gothic Romance Writers 2008 Haunted Hearts contest. Also, I’m preparing to participate in this year’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I had such fun with it last year and I’m looking forward to the challenge again this year.



Do you have any new releases coming out soon?


The Witch and the Wolf is my newest which was released in July. I have several manuscripts currently submitted to editors and hopefully I’ll have good news concerning them soon.

How did you end up becoming a writer?


I followed an idea that has taken me on the journey of a lifetime!. On a trip to England, a story started coming together in my mind. By the end of the vacation, it was complete and ready to be put to paper … or so I thought. That real journey started my imagination up a road that continually leads to others.



Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

I have a very active imagination and I play “What if …?” all the time. An interesting scenario in the newspaper or on the television news can send my imagination into overdrive. I start connecting ideas and before long a story is born.



What do you feel makes your stories stand apart from others in your genre(s)?


I think that would have to be my secondary characters. I love writing quirky secondary characters for my main characters to interact with. They can add a well-placed comedic break to lighten the mood when the plot gets heavy.



What do you do to celebrate a new book contract?

The first person to know is always my husband, followed closely by my fabulous critique partner, Kimberly Lang. Then I give a shout out to my on-line writing group. I follow that up with a call to my best friend who always insists that our husbands take us out for a celebratory meal that usually involves lobster and champagne.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?

I love to read and always have. Although I write romance and enjoy reading romance, I read almost everything. It’s not unusual for me to have several books going at once—usually a romance, a main-stream, and a non-fiction of some type. My favorite romance authors are Diana Gabaldon and Jennifer Crusie (how’s that for opposing ends of the spectrum?). I also love the classics and am an avid Thomas Hardy fan.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I’m currently working on a single-title contemporary series with a down home setting. I love working on it because I feel as though I’m writing about my best friends.

How did you end up becoming a writer?


My first attempt at writing was on a fan fiction forum. I read many stories from other writers - some good, some very, very bad - and decided to give it a go. The first story I ever had published was an erotic short called Room Service which was included in an anthology called Down and Dirty vol.2, edited by Alison Tyler.



What pulled you to start writing paranormal romance?

I love the genre and read many books and movies about it. My favourite combination is an erotic paranormal romance. It combines the elements I enjoy most. I love dark stories and characters and there is nothing sexier than a tormented hero!



Do you plot out your stories or does your muse carry you along?

I let my muse have free reign some of the time but she needs to be kept in check. Often, I plot the stories out, especially when I write for a particular genre such as menage.



How do you relax after a successful writing day?

I am in a permanently relaxed state most of the time so it's not a problem. I get a huge sense of satisfaction from knowing I have put in a good day's writing.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?

As previously mentioned, paranormal is my favourite but I will basically read anything. A few authors I enjoy are Jilly Cooper, Christine Feehan, Stephenie Meyer.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I am looking for a home for a full length paranormal romance I've written. It has all the elements I mentioned before plus an epic, sweeping romance. I love this story and I hope to be able to share it with you all soon.




Do you have any new releases coming out soon?

I have a contemporary erotic romance called 'Dance Like Nobody's Watching' coming out on October 27th. Sherrie is a costume designer, working on a TV show featuring celebs dancing with the stars of Ballroom. Ty Webster is one such star and he is crazy about Sherrie, but she can't seem to stop herself allowing her physical disability to cause a rift between them.

How did you end up becoming a writer?

I’ve always been an avid reader and so the natural progression was writing. I’ve been writing for pleasure since I was thirteen. When I was thirty, I decided it was time to share my imagination, and so I started submitting my work for publication.


Where do you find names for your characters?


I own several name books, and I’ll just randomly open up to a section and keep going until I find a name that fits the character and story.

What is something that you tell unpublished or new authors when they ask for advice?


Don’t give up. Write for the love of it because if you’re writing for fame and fortune you’ll be disappointed. Write what you enjoy. Don’t write what’s popular unless that’s what you want to write. You never know when the next big trend with hit. Write what you love and other’s will love it too. Your unique voice is what publishers are looking for; don’t try to be someone else.



How do you relax after a successful writing day?


Sadly, I have a day job. Writing is the way I relax! When I’m not writing I’m mothering my elementary school aged kids, or hanging out with my hubby. We like to camp, fish, and bike. I never go camping without a notebook or the notebook computer!



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?


I’ve been reading romance since I was twelve. My grandmother would give me garbage bags full of Harlequins in the summer and I’d read a book or two a day. (My daughter will be sticking to YA lol). I started devouring paranormal romance as an older teen in the late nineties. They are much easier to find now but Futuristic and paranormal have been my favorites since I was sixteen.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I always have more than one project on the memory stick! I’m working on a Valentine’s Day piece for an anthology with a few of my Wild Horse Press friends and a three novella’s. One is Paranormal, one is urban fantasy, and one is steam punk, I’m a random kind of girl.



Do you have any new releases coming out soon?

You betcha, I have two in September and three releases in October, I have one in November and two in December. Let me tell you about them. I’m also working on book 10 in the Mirage series YA paranormal romance short story series. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?


My stories are a mixture of fantasies, dreams, and intriguing stories my aunts spun to me in my early teenaged years. Some of my characters, or ideas present themselves to me during meditation. My best ideas for writing come to me when I’m balanced mentally and spiritually. Currently, I have over forty story ideas, and many I have taken notes on and will write in the near future.



If you had to pick a favorite among your characters, which one would you pick and why?


Oh, I would pick Magnus Abernethy because he’s a sexy as hell Highlander who will do what he must to protect and appease his woman! Magnus is the ultimate package. ; ) He has an awesome sense of humor, and such an intriguing manner about him!



What do you do to relax after a successful day of writing?


I spend time with my daughters, meditate, watch television, or listen to music. A few days out of the week, I’ll exercise, that helps to expend energies collected during the course of the day.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?


Yes, I love to read. My favorite genres are the interracial and paranormal erotic romances & erotica.


There are too many favorite authors of mine to list, but to name a few: J. Hali Steele, Dahlia Rose, Serenity King, Tracy Jordyn, Bonnie Lea Elliott, and sooo many others!



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

Yes, currently I’m working on a short story called The Witch and Her Master. The setting is Nineteenth century New Orleans. My hero, Jacques DuBourg is involved with his slave, Celeste, despite his father; Claude DuBourg’s efforts to drive them apart. Now mind you, Jacques doesn’t view Celeste as a slave, but as an equal. Behind closed doors, the can be as free as they want with one another. Unfortunately, when in public, they must hide their relationship. Fate has it’s way with the couple, and they face a few obstacles such as the dark force from The Louisiana Bayou, and a cruel slave master, Alain.



Do you have any new releases coming out soon?


I have two upcoming releases that are anthologies. My Dark Lord and Master is a dark BDSM tale, to be released in mid-October for XoXo Publishing’s Halloween anthology. The story has a little twist at the end, something I think readers may like, especially those who drift to the darker side of the paranormal. ; )


I was invited by Amira Press to participate in the Bad Boy Ie for release October 29th. I can’t wait!!!

All BBI stories will be released via ebook format, then later, the stories will combined into one print book!! This was an exciting opportunity, and I’m waiting for my edits on this one!

How did you end up becoming a writer?

I don’t remember not being a writer, to be honest. I’ve written or drafted stories since I was a kid. At thirteen, I penned my first novel-length manuscript and never looked back. I wrote informally for several years, selected Creative Writing as a major in college, posted numerous stories online for feedback and criticism, and decided to try my hand at publication a little over a year ago. It’s been a great ride thus far; I can’t wait to see where else it takes me.



Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Aaron Sorkin wrote, “Good writers borrow from other writers. Great writers steal from them outright.” While I do not steal, I confess to finding motivation when reading my favorite authors. Certain authors affect me to the point where I reach for their material when feeling particularly uninspired; their style and use of language makes me want to write. From there, I dream up various scenarios and find further stimulation from something on the news or in a daily interaction.

When push comes to shove, though, I really develop stories around characters—a good character will drive a story forward, and often hijack it from the author and give it life of its own.



Who (or what) do you feel inspired your writing style the most?

I’ve already quoted Aaron Sorkin; I was always a dialogue writer, but he truly gave me a sense of how much dialogue can drive a scene. His dialogue is brilliant. If I need inspiration, I’ll pop in the early seasons of The West Wing or Sports Night and find a cadence to my characters’ speech patterns. It gets the ball rolling in a big ole way. Stephen King is also a big inspiration. I’d forgotten how much I love his style until recently rereading Bag of Bones. Love or hate his work, the man can certainly manipulate words.



What do you feel makes your stories stand apart from others in your genre(s)?

I do my best to infuse as much heart and emotion into my love scenes as possible, rather than only describing the physical. I know I’m not the only author who does this—far from it—but I have been told more than once that whatever I do in my love scenes works, so I plan to stick with it. As for what sets my stories apart in terms of storytelling and plot, I think it’s a matter of voice. Authors who can be identified based on the stories they write, the characters they breathe to life, the words they use and the style in which they use them are the ones I find memorable, and I do my best to stamp my voice into everything I write.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?

I pretty much read anything I can get my hands on. I love paranormal, but I have started drifting toward contemporary and romantic suspense. My favorite authors are Lynsay Sands, Katie MacAlister, Shannon McKenna, Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R. Ward, and J.A. Saare. I also love Stephen King, Jane Austen, and Daphne du Maurier. Any author who can infuse the story with believable characters, strong dialogue encased in equally strong prose has me from, “Hello.”



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I am about 10,000 words into a lengthy, paranormal manuscript, but I believe I will redirect my attention temporarily to lighter and shorter contemporary stories for the time being. Sometimes you need to let a story sit to find it again, and while I am excited about what I have on paper, I find it’s better not to argue with where the muse takes me. If I force myself to write something while my creativity is flowing in a different direction, I will ultimately be dissatisfied with the results. I already have a tendency to work things to death without cause or provocation, and I’d rather be happy with where I have my current WIP than look back and wish I had stopped when my muse took a sabbatical.



Do you have any new releases coming out soon?

Moving Target premiered at the beginning of July. At the moment, my release roster is empty. But check back! I’ll have something ready soon enough.

How did you end up becoming a writer?

To be honest it was my husband that gave me that extra little umpf. I was reading a lot and he suggested that I try my hand at it. I scoffed at first, but he was persistent and so here I am now.



Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

They can be from anything! I can smell or see something, even hear something and a story pops into my head. For instance, I took a trip with my husband to a state park where we stayed in a cabin. It was that experience coupled with the caves and waterfalls that inspired one of my latest books I’m writing. Also, if you notice, I write a lot of my stories in Colorado. I am originally from the rocky mountain state and loved it so much I tend to base my stories around it. It works for me,though.



Who (or what) do you feel inspired your writing style the most?

To be honest I started reading Christine Feehan books and loved them! I also started reading Jaid Black. I like to think of my writing style as original, but those two authors definitely nudged me in the right direction.



What do you feel makes your stories stand apart from others in your genre(s)?

This is a great question! I think my stories stand apart because I love going into great detail. I want the readers to be able to experience what is fully happening to the characters as if they were right there.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?

I love to read! My favorite genres are paranormal romance and sci-fi romance and erotica.


Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I am currently working on third book for my Luecross Wolf series tentatively called Carnal, and an erotic paranormal romance.


Do you have any new releases coming out soon?

I have one coming out in the next couple months with Siren-Bookstrand. It is called Lilly’s Surrender and is a ménage a trios.

Thank you for inviting me to Happily Ever After Reviews. I appreciate the chance to tell you something about myself and my books.



How did you end up becoming a writer?


I have always been a writer. I think I might have been born with a pen in my hand. I started out making up sad, pitiful little poems before graduating to short stories. I even won a few competitions before I found my true love – writing romance novels.


What is your favorite thing about being an author? What keeps you going?


I love creating characters and getting them to do exciting and often daring deeds. I get the chance to write about brooding tortured heroes (my favorite kind), who are saved by the love of a brave resourceful woman. What keeps me going is a good review, or a letter from a fan telling me how they enjoyed my story.



Where do you find names for your characters?


Anywhere really, in books, the newspapers, people I know, and sometimes they just jump into my head from I don’t know where.



What is it about historical romance that captures your heart?


Dashing heroes and brave, resourceful women. I love reading and writing about a bygone era when women travelled thousands of miles across the sea to start up new lives in Australia. They left the British Isles knowing that there was little chance of them ever being able to return. They fought the elements, loneliness and the tyranny of distance in a savage, inhospitable land and won. I didn’t want their stories of courage and sacrifice to be relegated to some dusty tome in a library or museum.



Do you like to read? If so, what are your favorite genres and authors?

Yes, I like reading, unfortunately I don’t get as much time as I would like. My favorite genre is romance, particularly historical. As for authors, I try to support my fellow e-pub authors and they are a talented bunch. No hardship reading any of their books.



Are there any projects that you are currently working on?

I am currently revising a long manuscript which I wrote a few years ago. It has a working title of Savage Possession, and I would liken it to Wuthering Heights set in Australia. Even though this manuscript did win an award, I now know that I can do so much more with it, using the knowledge I have gained over the last couple of years.

Reluctant Father is my latest release from The Wild Rose Press.
